Making List Rental More Effective with Research

List rental is often touted as a grand way to instantly expand your email opt-in list, but few people discuss the fact that rented lists can be next to useless if you haven´t done your research. It´s not enough to simply jump onto a website and rent a list without a second thought, just because it has your industry label on it. A “work at home mom” list isn´t necessarily interested in what you have to offer, so make sure you check it out first.
What You Need to Know About List Rental
- How were the emails collected? This will give you a good idea of how responsive they will actually be. Emails collected via paid to open programs will automatically have a lower response rate, though your open rate will be very high (they only get paid if they open the email).
- What options did people choose to be on this list? For example, it´s possible that anyone who checked a variety of options would have been placed on the list . . . rendering it very low value.
- Are people being paid to read your emails? Then they won´t be terribly responsive. Look for list rental companies who offer their subscribers information that is relevant to their needs.
Email list rental needs to be approached carefully. Make sure you know as much as possible about the list before investing your hard earned money. Often, list rental can end up being a sinkhole for your cash, but that should be easy enough to avoid by simply making sure that you understand where your emails are coming from and how they were collected. Any company not willing to provide this info should be avoided.
